Do you believe you can change?

Do you believe you can change? Or is everything already fixed? This is the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.

Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right

Fixed mindset

A fixed mindset is a given and stems from a fear of failure and avoiding challenges; in fact, you are programmed to protect yourself.

Growth mindset

With a growth mindset, you actually start to see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.

Probably Henry Ford also encountered many challenges in creating his first automobile in 1896.

Born in 1863 into a farming family and with a special aptitude for engineering, he finally built his own cylinder engine at age 30. I am curious to see his wife Clara's face when he demonstrated this cylinder engine on the kitchen counter on Christmas Eve. The making process must have gone by fits and starts. And his surroundings will also have often looked on, shaking their heads.

As a "recovering chronic perfectionist”, developing a growth mindset is a daily workout for me.

Just today I was preparing a coaching session on this very topic. And oops, I put my freshly brewed coffee on the tray. Tada, a coffee stain. That immediately sets off all kinds of alarm bells in my head. Thoughts like ‘oh no, now I have to make a new printout’, ‘the client must think I'm sloppy’.

Let's put it this way, making mistakes will never become my hobby, but I learn from them every day. Because trying to mask my mistakes takes a lot more effort on my part.

In my practice as an executive coach, I work with people who have reached a certain level through hard work and presentation. Often you then get hung up a lot on intelligence and end up in the comfort zone: you avoid challenges, try to appear smart and seek confirmation in personality or character. You don't want to experience the feeling of failure, appearing stupid or being rejected. This limits your performance, ability to learn and progress.

When you work with me we will stretch that comfort zone and I will challenge you to explore multiple sides of yourself. Also what you keep yourself small in or where you avoid risks. For example, if I hear you say “I can't do that,” my answer will be "not yet. By examining the obstacles and making the steps smaller, you probably can.

Here are six tips to get started on your own daily growth minset training. These are some of the tips based on journalist Kevin Kruse's research. He interviewed more than 200 successful top performers about their mindset:

1. Focus on your own growth process

Enjoy the growth process and not just the end result. The road to it is at least as important as the goal. You have your own pace in learning and development: Don't compare your chapter 1 with someone else's chapter 20. Everyone has to start somewhere.

2. Ask for and learn from feedback

Enjoy compliments and absorb improve yourself with feedback. Simply say "Thank you. This will make you better.

3. Learn from your mistakes

Accept your mistakes. Reflect. Ask for directions and learn from your mistakes. People with the right mindset understand that they learn important lessons from their mistakes.

4. Be happy with challenges

A challenge is an opportunity to grow. It is not a cause for anxiety or stress. Seize challenges with both hands. For example, Plan A didn't work, but the alphabet has more letters!

5. Hang in there

It can be tempting to quit in the face of adversity. This is precisely where you make a difference. In a setback, you keep going until you succeed. A creation process includes the moment when t seems hopeless. Make sure you keep putting one foot in front of the other on your path.

6. Seek inspiration from others

Use examples of others who have succeeded. For example, a friend or colleague who managed to do it. See the other person as inspiration. If they can do it, so can you.

In this leaflet, I have sample sentences that can help you practice yourself daily in a more growth mindset. It all starts with the first step: becoming aware of how you talk to yourself!

If Mr. Ford can do it, so can you!
