They are the key to your impact. My superpower became the ability to sense the atmosphere and attune myself to the needs of others. As soon as I walk into a room, I immediately sense the atmosphere and become aware of the undercurrent: the unspoken words, the needs and desires of others. Of course, this can be a great help. But it can also be my Achilles\u2019 heel.<\/p><p>Since I\u2019ve been on a journey of self-discovery for nearly half a century, I\u2019ve discovered a number of benefits along the way. This is what I've learned.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4eb48b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4eb48b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Leadership comes from within. It starts with leading yourself\u2014not out of fear, but out of self-compassion.<\/p><p>The secret to commanding a room isn't dominance or the volume of your voice.<\/p><p>It is <strong>clarity, calm, and connection<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Here are five science-backed tips to help you dominate any space, no matter what it is.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-450fe92 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"450fe92\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1. Start with calm (you are the calm guide)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d2a551 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9d2a551\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Imagine you walk into a room\u2014whether it\u2019s a meeting, a keynote speech, or a social gathering\u2014and meet someone for the first time; you form an impression of that person. In a fraction of a second, you subconsciously ask yourself: Can I trust this person? Will he or she help me feel confident, safe, or inspired?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d658282 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"d658282\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e2fdb1f elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e2fdb1f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Funny story\u2026 I used to watch every episode of Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer. He taught dog owners to be calm and assertive when guiding a dog. Now, I\u2019m not suggesting you should start treating people like dogs. On the contrary. Composure\u2014standing firmly, relaxed shoulders, deliberate movements\u2014conveys authority even before you say a word.<\/p><p>In the words of Joseph Campbell in his book \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementboek.nl\/boek\/9781608681891\/the-heros-journey-joseph-campbell?affiliate=8091\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hero's Journey<\/a>\u2019: Your audience (the hero) is overwhelmed, and you (the guide) have the task of showing them: I\u2019ve got this under control.<\/p><p>Neuroscience supports this: people are programmed to mirror emotional states. If others are stressed and you are calm, they will adjust to match your state.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9263aa4 elementor-widget__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9263aa4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Do you have a daily practice that helps you train your nervous system to stay calm? We all spend so much time in a state of stimulation that we need the opposite practice\u2014silence, stillness, and deep breathing\u2014to train ourselves to enter a calm state.<\/p><p>Practice this for 5 to 20 minutes every day, and over time you'll be surprised at how much your response to challenging situations changes.<\/p><p><strong>What can you do in a room?<\/strong> Pause before you say anything. Breathe. Plant your feet firmly on the ground. Let the silence work for you. Silence sends a signal to the space: <em>you are safe here<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0007eff elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0007eff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2. Use eye contact to build trust (not to intimidate)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b94d645 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b94d645\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Eye contact is one of the fastest ways to build trust. Research in social psychology shows that appropriate eye contact enhances perceptions of credibility, warmth, and self-confidence.<\/p><p>Daniel Goleman, a leading researcher in the field of emotional intelligence, writes: \u201cThe most effective leaders have one crucial trait in common: they all possess a high degree of emotional intelligence.\u201d<\/p><p>Eye contact is emotional intelligence in action. It conveys presence, attention, and respect\u2014three things that every person or audience craves.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-509e992 elementor-widget__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"509e992\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>What can you do?<\/strong> Maintain eye contact for 3\u20135 seconds with each person. Focus on connection, not control.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e1572b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0e1572b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3. Project calmness on the outside. If your words convey confidence but your body language conveys fear, the audience will believe your body language.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5871c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b5871c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Research on embodied cognition shows that posture not only influences how others perceive you, but also <em>how<\/em> you feel and perform. Amy Cuddy, a professor of social psychology at Harvard, sums this up clearly: \u201cOur bodies change our thoughts, our thoughts change our behavior, and our behavior changes our results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What about that inner critic? That sabotaging voice, those irrational thoughts that you're a fraud? It has to be authentic.<\/p>\n<p>This was a huge revelation to me.<\/p>\n<p>Most people try to use their thoughts to calm themselves down. They try to think positively. They believe that the problem can be solved at the level of mindset.<\/p>\n<p>No. No, that's not true. The gateway to true peace is opened through the physical: <i>the body<\/i>. Relax your body, and your mind will find peace.<\/p>\n<p>Psychological stress and emotional states can manifest physically as muscle tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and jaw. This was demonstrated by Habib Yaribeygi\u2019s 2017 study.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a3f213b elementor-widget__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a3f213b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>What can you do?<\/strong> Stretch, do push-ups, and practice breathing exercises. Align your body with your message. Adopt an open posture, with a straight back, relaxed shoulders, and arms uncrossed. This will help you project confidence and approachability.<\/p><p>And when you work with me in an executive coaching program, you\u2019ll discover your own personal power pose that helps you feel more confident, no matter where you are.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-230ba0a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"230ba0a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">4. Talk less, say more (clarity is charisma)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8486096 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8486096\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Are you the type of person who starts stuttering when you get nervous? Stuttering can detract from your appearance.<\/p><p>Cognitive science shows that the brain rewards clarity with trust. Leaders who communicate concisely are therefore seen as more intelligent and persuasive.<\/p><p>Nervousness usually starts when you think it\u2019s all about YOU. How about viewing the topic at hand, figuratively speaking, as a piece of paper between you and the other people in the room? Make a distinction between yourself, personally, and the content.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9933ad e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"f9933ad\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c8d427 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c8d427\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>By focusing on the purpose of your message, you can see yourself as an instrument for the greater good. You\u2019ll be less distracted by your inner thoughts and more focused on the greater purpose you\u2019re here to fulfil.<\/p><p>Controlling the room doesn't mean you have to say everything, but rather that you say the right things, briefly and simply, and then stop. Use tip number 2 and make eye contact with the people in the room. And lay out the content clearly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a89a308 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a89a308\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">5.
